As Nation Mourns Loss of Dick Clark, Dr. Bonnie Reminds People to Embrace their Loved Ones

Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil well remembers her time spent with Dick Clark growing up. “I used to listen to him ever single day. I would literally rush home from school to see American Bandstand. I used the refrigerator as my dance partner until my grandmother started noticing the food inside wasn’t staying cold and offered to be my partner instead! We danced to American Bandstand every day.”
As an adult, Dr. Bonnie appeared on The Other Half, Clark’s daytime talk show with Mario Lopez and Danny Bonaduce. (http://bit.ly/I9blFQ) She remembers her time on the show as side-splitting, with Dick Clark getting his hair dyed in multiple colors, acting hilariously, and being a good sport. “It was wonderful to have a chance to be introduced with him all those years later; we had a nice connection on the show,” she says. Dr. Bonnie’s husband even got a chance to be on the show when he was a teenager, so Dick Clark and his show holds a special place in her heart, like it does for so many around the world.
“He has touched the lives of many because of his positive behavior,” says Dr. Bonnie, “he had such a zest for life, he was a positive, optimistic person. He gave a lot of people their start in showbiz and made them stars just by believing in them.” Dr. Bonnie concurs with the idea that without American Bandstand, vis a vis Dick Clark, shows like American Idol would not be the phenomena that they are today. Dick Clark picked fresh, young, unseasoned talent and brought it to the American people with his enthusiasm and optimism, which is the springboard for American Idol. Not to mention – New Year’s Eve will never be the same.
It’s a huge loss to the industry and to the public when such stars pass away. “Music is good for the soul, it makes our heart sing,” Dr. Bonnie says, “and studies show that it’s healing to the body and soul. I frequently recommend patients listen to their favorite song to help them get through a trying time.”
We have lost a lot of musically inspiring people already this year, including Whitney Houston, and Levon Helm, who also passed away this week. Helm played with Bob Dylan and died of throat cancer, unexpectedly, three days after finding out that his cancer had come back from remission.
Dr. Bonnie says Clark’s death and Helm’s abrupt passing remind people that time is short, life is short, and it’s important to hold the ones that we love closest to us. “Don’t pick on your partner or loved ones,” she reminds, “don’t nag about the little things. Instead appreciate what you have and tell them you love them today.”
To this end, Dr. Bonnie suggests people do a gratitude exercise – sit down and list things you’re thankful for, then share that with your partner, children and friends. “We should all have gratitude for what we have, she says.” She points to Dick Clark as a classic example – even in a wheel chair following a stroke he still had a smile on his face. “That’s what we want to live on,” Dr. Bonnie encourages, “the spirit to live with positivity, and to live life to its fullest.” The biggest gift we can give those who pass away is helping their memory live on in our actions; being grateful and positive is a touching way to honor these two stars who contributed so much.
